Reading Time: 5 minutes

As an eLearning Instructional Designer, I was busy working on a new course design project for a client when my phone pinged with an email notification. Trying not to be distracted, I glanced at the notification and saw it was from Upwork, my go-to platform for finding new freelance work opportunities.

I clicked on the notification, not fully sure what to expect, but my eyes immediately fell on the job title: “Freelance Audio Visual Translation and Voice over artist | French – Upwork.” My heart raced as I read through the job description, detailing the need for a multilingual voice-over artist to translate and record audio for a technical eLearning course.

I couldn’t believe it. It was as if this job posting had been tailor-made for me. French was my second language, and I had years of experience recording audio for various projects as an eLearning Instructional Designer. The hourly rate was also more than reasonable, and the opportunity to work as a freelancer on a project like this was too good to pass up.

I immediately hit the “apply” button, attached my portfolio, and sent a quick message to the hiring manager. The rest of my day was spent eagerly awaiting their response, all the while trying to focus on the task at hand. But my mind kept drifting back to the prospect of this exciting new opportunity.

“Scanning through the details of this job post, I am immediately intrigued because it perfectly aligns with my skill set of audio-visual translation and voice-over work in French, a language I am fluent in and passionate about.”

This job posting immediately caught my interest because it beautifully intersects with my unique skill set and personal interests. Being bilingual in English and French, I’ve always been passionate about languages and utilized this skill in my work as an instructional designer and voice-over artist. Moreover, the capacity to work on technical eLearning courses ties in seamlessly with my technical background. It presents not just an opportunity to earn, but also a platform to keep my language skills sharp and remain engaged with technical content. Additionally, freelancing offers the flexibility to work on a variety of projects and the chance to continually meet new people and explore different industries. All of these factors combined make this job posting extremely appealing to me.

As soon as I read the job title, a wave of nostalgia washed over me, immediately propelling me back to a project I had worked on a few years prior. It was a time when I’d just made the leap into freelancing and was working on one of my first significant jobs; a full-scale eLearning course translation and voiceover project for a lauded Parisian tech company. The project, lush with complexities and challenges, demanded that I bust through language barriers, culturally contextualize technical connotations, and, quite literally, find my voice in another tongue.

The moment I laid my eyes on this job title, it was as if a memory box had been flung open and I was instantly transported back to a daring project I took head-on about three years ago. It was an exciting endeavor with a tech startup, where I was entrusted with the responsibility of creating, translating, and voicing their eLearning modules in French. Amidst the exhilaration and nervous energy of this challenging task, I discovered my passion for merging my linguistic prowess with my eLearning course designing skills, leading to a fulfilling journey that this new opportunity now vividly reminded me of.

Conclusion

Finding a job posting that aligns so well with my skills and interests is not an everyday occurrence. This role demands a unique blend of language proficiency, voice-over artistry, and familiarity with eLearning platforms, all of which I have honed over years of dedication. In addition, the prospect of bringing technical education to a wider audience is a mission I’m passionate about. Thus, I am extremely interested in this opportunity and would eagerly invest my time in connecting with the hiring manager.

Initial Communication

In my initial reply, I would aim to strike the right balance between professionalism and enthusiasm. I would start by expressing my excitement about the opportunity and detailing why my unique skill set makes me an ideal candidate for the role. To maintain a sense of curiosity, I would also include a teaser about a recent similar project I successfully completed, promising to reveal more during a potential interview.

Questions for the Interview

During the interview, I would inquire further about the project specifics such as the types of technical courses involved, the target audience demographics, and the overall timeline for the project. Additionally, I would ask about the preferred tone and style for the voice-overs to better understand their vision for the courses.

If Not Interested

However, if hypothetically the project didn’t interest me, I would respond gracefully, thanking the hiring manager for considering me and expressing that while the project seems novel and interesting, it doesn’t quite align with my current professional focus. I would then wish them the best in finding the right candidate for the project, and express openness to potential future collaborations that might be more aligned with my goals.
