Teachers undergoing training through the iteach certification program will now have access to Khan Academy’s new AI-powered assistant software, thanks to a recent partnership.

Known as Khanmigo, this tool will be accessible to all program teachers and will support them in integrating AI into their teaching practices, such as lesson planning, curriculum development, and personal career growth.

Although still in its beta phase, Khanmigo has garnered support from Microsoft, which is providing backing through its Azure OpenAI Service.

iteach currently serves more than 1,550 districts and Local Education Agencies in the US and stands as the sole non-university program for alternative teacher certification accredited by the CAEP.

Andrew Rozell, the president of iteach, expressed, “Through the collaboration with Khan Academy, new educators will enter classrooms with confidence, equipped to educate students on the ethical use of AI and leverage this powerful technology to alleviate their workload, which can often be overwhelming.”

The rising need for AI integration in educational settings

The adoption of AI in classrooms is already on the rise, with approximately one-third of K-12 educators acknowledging their use of this technology.

Khan Academy envisions Khanmigo as a means to alleviate teachers’ burdens and help them instruct students on AI fundamentals and safe usage.

A recent survey by the National 4-H Council revealed that around 72% of students expressed a desire for more guidance on utilizing AI-driven tools.

Implementation of Khanmigo

All prospective teachers affiliated with iteach will have Khanmigo at their disposal throughout their certification journey. The software also features a “refresh my knowledge” segment accessible to certified teachers seeking to enhance their skills.

Kristen DiCerbo, the chief learning officer at Khan Academy, highlighted, “Through this partnership, Khanmigo will equip aspiring iteach instructors with their personal teaching assistant. As they step into classrooms as qualified educators, they can leverage AI to streamline preparations and focus on fostering meaningful interactions with students.”
